Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh: Police arrested Dhanaraj alias Vijay, the second notorious chain snatcher involved in robbing a retired woman constable, following an encounter near Bara Sirohi canal early Sunday morning.

Dhanaraj, a resident of Jhinjhana, Shamli district, is an accomplice of Niyaz Ahmad, who was earlier arrested during an encounter in Rawatpur. Dhanaraj had dozens of prior criminal cases registered against him.

The incident took place on January 8, when the robbers snatched a chain from Manjulata Dubey, a retired sub-inspector from CB-CID and wife of deputy jailer Gyanendra Swaroop Dubey, outside her home in Keshavpuram, Rawatpur.

Police launched a city-wide search, deploying seven teams and using over 1,000 CCTV cameras and cell tower location tracking to identify the suspects.

During the Sunday encounter, Dhanaraj was apprehended after firing at police while riding a bike with his accomplice. The police recovered a country-made pistol, cartridges, and the bike used in the robbery. Dhanaraj was treated for injuries at CHC, and interrogation is ongoing.
