On August 6, 2025, a six-member team from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) began its probe into the brutal murder of K. Uma Shankar, a former Yuva Morcha (youth wing) leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Puducherry unit. Uma Shankar was hacked to death near Paris Mahal in Lawspet, Puducherry, on April 26.
As part of the handover process, Lawspet police submitted the case files, evidence, and investigative reports to the CBI. The case, now being treated as a high-profile political murder, had seen major developments before the CBI takeover.
Police had already arrested 15 individuals in connection with the murder. Among them is the prime accused, Karuna, who has a known criminal history, including involvement in four previous cases in Puducherry.
With the accused now in custody, the CBI is expected to dig deeper into the motive and broader conspiracy behind the killing.
