Police Pursuit Ends Where Stolen Pickup Was Taken

by Sophia Bennett

TULSA, Okla. — A Tulsa woman was arrested after allegedly stealing a pickup truck from a residential driveway and leading police on a chase across the city, according to Tulsa police.

The theft was reported on Jan. 7, after a homeowner near Xyler Street and North Atlanta Place returned from running errands and discovered his Chevy pickup truck missing.

Police said surveillance video showed a suspect entering the victim’s property, accessing a building where the keys were stored, and driving away in the truck.

Just after midnight the following morning, officers located the stolen vehicle traveling east on 11th Street near Highway 169. When police attempted a traffic stop, the driver sped away, initiating a pursuit.

A Tulsa Police helicopter assisted as the suspect drove at high speeds through multiple parts of the city. Officers said the chase ended when the driver abandoned the truck in the same neighborhood where it had originally been stolen.

Police identified the suspect as 34-year-old Cassondra Smith. After a brief foot pursuit, officers took her into custody without incident.

Smith was arrested on complaints of larceny of a motor vehicle, second-degree burglary, eluding police, and reckless driving.

Authorities noted that Smith is a tribal member, and under the McGirt decision, the case will be referred to federal and tribal authorities for further investigation.
