Identity fraud continues to affect millions, and for some criminals, it’s a means to commit even bigger crimes—like auto loan fraud. A recent case in San Antonio, Texas has brought this issue to light once again.
Cassandra Trevino, 42, was arrested on April 7th for allegedly stealing the identity of an 87-year-old victim and using it to apply for dozens of car loans. According to KSAT, Trevino is facing charges of identity fraud and exploitation of the elderly after she reportedly altered the victim’s driver’s license and used personal details, including their Social Security number, to pose as them.
Authorities say she was remarkably prolific in her attempts, applying for 46 auto loans between October 30, 2024, and February 11, 2025. In several cases, she successfully left dealerships with vehicles, only to have them repossessed once the scam was uncovered.
Her downfall came when she accidentally left her real identification in one of the repossessed vehicles, directly linking her to the fraud.
Investigators are still determining how Trevino gained access to the elderly victim’s personal information, though online scams are suspected.
Unfortunately, elderly individuals are frequent targets for identity theft, and this case highlights the need for increased vigilance and stronger safeguards.
This is a developing story, and updates are expected as the investigation continues.
