BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. — A 21-year-old woman has been found guilty on all 17 charges related to the abuse of a toddler she was babysitting.

Carly Webb pleaded guilty to five misdemeanor assault and battery charges but had previously pleaded not guilty to 11 additional misdemeanors and a felony child abuse charge.

Prosecutors said Webb abused a 19-to-23-month-old child between October 2023 and January 2024. While no physical injuries were reported, her behavior was deemed abusive. The defense argued that the child was not harmed and Webb’s actions did not demonstrate “reckless disregard for human life.”

During the trial, three witnesses testified: the child’s parents and Corporal Alderson from the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office. The parents described Webb as a trusted family friend, responsible for preparing meals and drinks for their daughter. However, surveillance footage revealed that the child often appeared hungry and was subjected to abusive treatment.

The video evidence showed Webb yelling, mocking, withholding food, hitting the child with toys, kicking, leaving her in a crib for hours, and placing her in a cardboard box. Prosecutors also highlighted instances where Webb ate or discarded food meant for the child while she watched. On one occasion, the child was left in a crib for 21 hours straight.

The defense attempted to have all charges struck except the five to which Webb had pleaded guilty, but the judge denied the motion. Despite acknowledging Webb’s behavior as “disturbing” and “abhorrent,” her attorney argued it did not meet the legal standard for conviction. The court disagreed, finding her guilty on all counts.

Webb is currently out on bond, and her sentencing date has not yet been scheduled.
