Carlos Alvarado Denied Parole for 1991 Prison Murder

Inmate convicted of killing Edward Vasquez at Douglas prison

by Sophia Bennett

PHOENIX — Carlos Paul Alvarado, 66, had his latest parole application denied last month following input from the Cochise County Attorney’s Office.

Alvarado has been serving a life sentence for the 1991 murder of fellow inmate Edward M. Vasquez at the Arizona State Prison Complex in Douglas. Prosecutors say the killing was carried out at the behest of the Mexican Mafia.

Vasquez was found on the morning of Feb. 26, 1991, in his housing area with multiple blunt-force injuries to his head and face. Alvarado has remained incarcerated since his conviction for the violent assault.
