Carl Williams III Killed in Mobile Dance Recital Shooting

Gunfire at Saenger Theatre leaves one dead, one injured

A tragic shooting during a children’s dance recital at the Saenger Theatre in downtown Mobile, Alabama, left one man dead and another injured Sunday evening.

Carl Williams III, 27, was fatally shot following an argument inside the theater, according to Mobile Police. A second victim — an innocent bystander — was shot in the ankle and transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say the suspected shooter, identified as Sanders, was engaged in a verbal altercation with Williams during the Danze 101 recital before opening fire. Sanders has been arrested and charged with murder.

“To bring this to a child’s dance recital is despicable,” said Police Chief William Jackson, who was on the scene shortly after the incident occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m.

The shooting has sparked widespread outrage and grief in the community. Mayor Sandy Stimpson released a statement condemning the violence and expressing sorrow for the families and children affected:

“It is shocking that anyone would bring a loaded gun to a child’s dance recital — and even more unimaginable that someone would fire a weapon in a crowded theater,” Stimpson wrote. “There is no conflict or disagreement worth putting so many people at risk.”

He emphasized the trauma endured by the young dancers and their families, who should have been celebrating their achievements rather than coping with a senseless act of violence.

In response, the city and Oak View Group, which manages the venue, announced that enhanced security measures — including metal detectors and screenings — will be implemented at all events, both public and private, at the Saenger Theatre and Mobile Convention Center.

“We are exploring every option, including investing in additional security measures and tools,” Mayor Stimpson said.

Danze 101 and city officials issued a joint statement expressing deep sorrow and emphasizing their commitment to safety moving forward. The Saenger Theatre, long a symbol of artistic celebration, now grapples with the aftermath of tragedy but vows to remain a safe space for the community.
