Police arrested two men, including the prime accused, for running a car rental scam through the Zoom app, police said Thursday. The accused allegedly rented cars and then mortgaged or sold them in rural Rajgarh. So far, authorities have recovered 10 vehicles and are interrogating the suspects.
The case came to light after Pawan Saxena of Nanda Nagar filed a complaint with Pardesipura police. Saxena reported that on June 6, a person named Mohammad Muinuddin rented his car via the Zoom app. After the rental period ended, the car wasn’t returned, and its GPS was turned off.
When contacted, the person on the phone identified himself as Mohammad Hanif and promised to return the car in two days. Saxena later met Muinuddin, who said Hanif had booked the car using Muinuddin’s ID and mortgaged it.
Police investigation revealed that Muinuddin, Hanif, and their accomplice Shailendra from Narsinghgarh collaborated in renting cars through Zoom and mortgaging or selling them as second owners in Rajgarh’s rural areas.
The gang had also mortgaged one car to a dhaba owner, receiving approximately Rs2.5 lakh.
