Canton Trio Sentenced for Meth Trafficking and Drug Charges

Benson, Bird, and Spriggs get lengthy prison terms in Cherokee County

ATLANTA, Ga. — Three individuals from Canton have been sentenced to prison following their convictions on drug trafficking and related charges, announced the Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office.

Justin Benson, 29, Heather Bird, 49, and Terry Spriggs, 53, entered guilty pleas in negotiated agreements.

Benson was convicted of possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute and providing false information to law enforcement, receiving a 10-year sentence without parole.

Bird was found guilty on five drug-related counts, including possession of oxycodone and clonazepam, and sentenced to 15 years with parole eligibility.

Spriggs was convicted of methamphetamine trafficking and theft by receiving stolen property, sentenced to 20 years without parole.

The investigation began in July 2023 after a 911 call reported suspicious activity near a Canton home on Lower Scott Mill Road. Deputies discovered Bird in a stolen truck parked nearby, which she claimed belonged to Spriggs, the homeowner.

Inside the residence, officers found drug paraphernalia in plain sight. A narcotics team uncovered several types of drugs during a sweep. Benson was found hiding under a bed and gave law enforcement a false name.

“Let this outcome serve as a clear warning: drug trafficking will not be tolerated in Cherokee County,” said District Attorney Susan K. Treadaway. “We will continue working with law enforcement to dismantle these operations and hold those who endanger our community accountable.”
