In a major drug trafficking bust, the Cachar police on Tuesday seized 406 grams of suspected heroin, valued at approximately Rs 2 crore, and arrested five individuals near the Sonabarighat bypass on the outskirts of Silchar.
According to police, the operation followed a specific tip-off, after which a special team intercepted two vehicles. A thorough search of one of the cars uncovered 40 soap cases containing the contraband, concealed in a hidden chamber.
The five arrested were identified as:
Kamrul Islam (23) – Nilambazar, Sribhumi district
Halim Uddin (25) – Nilambazar, Sribhumi district
Sarmina Parbin (22) – Nilambazar, Sribhumi district
Monpui (50) – Zema Bawk, Aizawl, Mizoram
Lalthanpui (41) – Champhai district, Mizoram
Preliminary investigations suggest that the vehicles were traveling from Champhai district in Mizoram, indicating an inter-state and cross-border drug trafficking route.
The accused have been taken into custody, and legal proceedings have been initiated under relevant provisions of the law. Police continue to probe the network to identify further participants in the operation.
