BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. — Allen Lamont Charles, 48, a Butte College police officer, has been held to answer on multiple serious charges, including possession and distribution of child pornography and possession of an illegal assault rifle, officials confirmed Friday.

Charles, who pleaded not guilty following his arrest in April 2024, appeared in Butte County Superior Court where a judge determined there was sufficient evidence to bind him over for trial on all charges.

District Attorney Mike Ramsey explained that the investigation was initiated by a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) via the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) data system. Evidence showed Charles possessed and shared child pornography images and videos with two other individuals. The accounts used to distribute the material were accessed from multiple locations, including Charles’s home and the Butte College campus IP address.

Charles was arrested without incident on August 28, 2024, as he left his home for work. During the arrest, law enforcement seized several electronic devices, which later forensic analysis confirmed contained additional child pornography. Authorities also found an illegal assault rifle during a search of his residence.

Currently out on bail, Charles is scheduled to return to court on May 14, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. for a hearing to set the date for his jury trial.
