Former NFL cornerback Buster Skrine was arrested early Wednesday at his home in Roswell, Georgia, facing 18 charges tied to a dating scam scheme targeting women.
According to Fox 5 Atlanta, Skrine, 36, allegedly defrauded at least three women by fabricating stories about financial hardship and promising repayment through his NFL pension. The scheme reportedly netted him over $300,000, which he spent on Airbnb rentals, luxury travel, and gift cards.
Authorities launched an investigation in July after one victim reported the scam. Police believe there may be additional victims yet to come forward.
Skrine has been charged with deposit account fraud, identity fraud, financial transaction card fraud, theft by taking, and attempted theft. He is also wanted in Canada, where he was arrested in August 2023 for a $100,000 check fraud case. After being released on bail in April 2024 with a GPS monitor, Skrine allegedly removed the device and fled to the U.S.
A fifth-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns, Skrine played 11 seasons in the league. He also played for the New York Jets, Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers, and Tennessee Titans.
