Bargarh police arrested 24-year-old Bulu Meher and four of his associates on Wednesday for stealing 63 Sambalpuri sarees and Rs 3.6 lakh in cash from his father’s cupboard in Jalpali village, Bijepur police station limits, Bargarh district.
The theft was reported on Monday by Purna Meher, a 48-year-old weaver, who said the robbery occurred while he, his wife, and younger son were away attending a wedding in Lakhanpur on Sunday.
Investigations revealed that Bulu Meher, who had eloped two months ago due to family disputes, took advantage of his family’s absence to orchestrate the burglary. He conspired with local associate Sitaram Meher and involved three others — Hemanta Meher of Bhadigaon, Ashok Meher of Bhatli, and Hemanta Jal of Khaliapali — in the crime.
Padampur SDPO Pandab Sabar said, “Purna had purchased 65 sarees and kept 63 in his cupboard along with Rs 3.6 lakh cash. Suspicion fell on the elder son due to family conflicts, and he was found to be the main accused.”
Police recovered all 63 sarees, Rs 1.98 lakh in cash, five mobile phones, and a van used in the theft. All five accused were arrested and sent to judicial custody. The investigation is ongoing.
