A 29-year-old BSF jawan, Sudam Bagh from Kenthupani village, Sambalpur district, was arrested on Monday night in Sundargarh for allegedly attempting to kill his wife and subjecting her to physical and mental torture. Bagh was posted in Siliguri, West Bengal.

According to police, Bagh had developed a relationship with a 28-year-old woman from Sundargarh about five years ago via social media and frequently traveled there to meet her. Earlier this year, the woman discovered she was three months pregnant. Though initially reluctant to marry her, Bagh eventually married her in a temple in Sundargarh in September after family intervention.

After marriage, he allegedly tortured her physically and mentally. On November 23, Bagh allegedly attempted to suffocate his wife to death before leaving the house.

The victim lodged a complaint at the Town Police Station on November 25, prompting police action. Sudam Bagh was arrested on Monday and produced in court, which sent him to judicial custody.

Investigating Officer Bijaylaxmi Routray stated, “I have also informed his battalion via email regarding his arrest.”
