CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. — A Broward County middle school employee was arrested Saturday after allegedly running illicit basketball tournaments at a school gym and keeping the rental money, according to police.

Shaune Cannon, 50, a behavioral technician at Forest Glen Middle School, faces one count of organized scheme to defraud for amounts under $20,000 and one count of grand theft of more than $10,000, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Bank records indicate Cannon received multiple $1,500 Zelle payments from two basketball organizations for gym rentals in April, May, and June 2025, resulting in potential losses to the district totaling $11,545. The organization presidents confirmed the payments were made to Cannon.

Cannon, who resigned on Friday, was hired by the Broward School District in 2011 and previously worked at Ramblewood Middle School before joining Forest Glen Middle in 2023. Despite his resignation, he was still listed as a boys’ basketball coach at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School as of Monday night.

He is the fourth Broward School District employee arrested in recent months on similar charges. Others include:

Henry Lewis McNabb, former security specialist and coach at Blanche Ely High School

Brenton Hankerson, security specialist and girls varsity coach at Coral Springs High School

Donald Calloway, assistant girls basketball coach at Coral Springs High School

The arrests are part of an ongoing investigation by the Broward Schools Police, which began on June 3, 2025, after the district’s Special Investigative Unit received reports of fraudulent gym rental activities.

District spokesperson John Sullivan said the investigation reflects the Superintendent’s commitment to maintaining integrity and public trust across Broward schools.
