DANIA BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — A detention deputy with the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) has been arrested for aggravated battery and domestic battery following a violent domestic disturbance in Dania Beach.
BSO detectives from the Special Victims Unit arrested Deputy David Powell, 30, on Monday after a detailed investigation into the incident. The disturbance was reported to Broward County Regional Communications at 7:20 a.m. on April 7.
When deputies arrived at the scene, Powell initially claimed that he and a woman had only engaged in a verbal altercation. However, the victim provided a different account, telling detectives that Powell physically assaulted her. Investigators found that Powell had slapped the victim forcefully in the face and ear, causing her to lose hearing, and repeatedly beat her with a belt. Due to the severity of her injuries, the victim required hospitalization.
Further investigation uncovered additional instances of physical violence by Powell, dating back to March 2024. As a result, Powell now faces multiple charges: three counts of aggravated battery, one count of felony battery, and four counts of domestic battery.
After his arrest, Powell was transported to the Broward County Main Jail. A risk protection order was issued, and deputies seized several firearms from his possession.
Broward Sheriff Dr. Gregory Tony condemned the actions, stating, “Domestic violence is never acceptable. This is a serious issue that devastates the safety and wellbeing of individuals and families. Whenever anyone in this community, including employees of this agency, break the law, they will be held accountable for their actions.”
Powell, who was hired by BSO on December 6, 2021, is currently on administrative leave without pay.
