Oak Island, NC – Brian Reed Grant, a 40-year-old Fuquay-Varina resident and former Minor League Baseball player, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of 61-year-old Randolph Stewart Jr.

The incident occurred around 6 p.m. Wednesday at a residence on NE 49th Street in Oak Island. Officers with the Oak Island Police Department responded to reports of gunfire and found Stewart, the owner of Stewart Enterprises Locksmith Service, dead at the scene from gunshot wounds.

Authorities say Stewart was at the home performing locksmith services when the fatal shooting occurred. Body camera footage reportedly shows Grant claiming that Stewart held a knife to his throat before the shooting.

Grant, once drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2002, was identified through a match between his date of birth listed in arrest records and Minor League Baseball databases.

He is currently being held at the Brunswick County Detention Center without bond.
