TOMAKIN, NSW — A police raid on a property in Tomakin has led to the arrest and charging of Brent Galambos, 36, over an alleged mobile phone-based scam targeting unsuspecting Australians.
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) launched an investigation last month after being alerted by a telecommunications provider. Authorities allege Galambos sent fraudulent text messages claiming recipients’ mobile services would be restricted due to unpaid bills. The messages contained links to a fake website designed to steal victims’ personal and banking information.
During the raid, police seized a significant number of items believed to be linked to the scam, including computers, laptops, mobile phones, SIM cards, and other digital devices. Notably, several mobile phones were found hidden in an in-ground drainage pipe, according to police.
A forensic examination of one of the seized laptops reportedly revealed a large cache of personally identifiable information belonging to other individuals.
Galambos has been formally charged with:
Producing, supplying, or obtaining data with intent to commit a computer offence
Dishonestly obtaining or dealing in personal financial information
The matter has been adjourned to a later court date, while further investigations continue.
The AFP is urging the public to remain cautious of unexpected messages or links, particularly those claiming to be from telecom providers or banks, and to report any suspicious activity.
