NEWTON, N.C. — A man has been charged with murder after an assault left one woman dead and another person critically injured at a home in Newton on Christmas night.

The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at 10:30 p.m. on Mountain Grove Road, where deputies found a man and woman severely injured. Both were transported to a hospital by air ambulance, but 42-year-old Candy Annette Stacks later died from her injuries.

The resident of the home, 32-year-old Brent Allen Dingess, was arrested and charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder. He is being held without bond, and additional charges are expected.
