Brendan O’Mara Faces €10M Drug Charges, Bail Pending

Former Ryanair pilot seeks bail over major cannabis haul

by Sophia Bennett

Brendan O’Mara, a 62-year-old former Ryanair pilot from Meelick, Co Clare, remains in custody following his arrest in connection with the seizure of over €10 million worth of cannabis. He appeared via video link at Ennis District Court, marking his fourth appearance since Gardaí discovered an estimated 502 kg of cannabis at his home on May 7th.

The court heard that Mr O’Mara’s application for bail is pending before the High Court. His solicitor, Ted McCarthy, requested a two-week adjournment while awaiting a decision. Judge Gabbett granted the request and ordered Mr O’Mara to appear in person if released before his next hearing on June 25th.

O’Mara, who confirmed his identity via video from Limerick Prison, faces two charges: possession of cannabis, and possession for sale or supply. Gardaí have indicated that further and more serious charges may be filed.

At a previous bail hearing on May 10th, Gardaí objected to O’Mara’s release, citing the “strength and nature” of the evidence and the scale of the international investigation. Sergeant Rob Sheehy of the Limerick Divisional Drugs Unit described the case as being in its early stages and potentially involving multiple countries and suspects.

Sheehy also said O’Mara was a flight risk, highlighting his extensive aeronautical background and possession of three pilot licenses, including for helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. He added that O’Mara had ties to the United States.

Defense solicitor Tara Godfrey argued that O’Mara had offered to surrender all his licenses and had significant ties to Ireland. His sister also pledged €177,000 as a surety.

Ms. Godfrey emphasized the presumption of innocence, saying, “He has offered up all the means he could to leave this country and hasn’t. He should not be held in custody indefinitely.”

Judge Gabbett remanded Brendan O’Mara in custody and set June 25th for his next court appearance.
