EVANSVILLE, Ind. — A 37-year-old Evansville man has been arrested following a shootout in the Glenwood neighborhood that sent officers rushing to the scene after more than 20 shots were reported.

The incident happened around 7 p.m. Saturday near Judson Street and Sweetser Avenue, according to Evansville Police. A 911 caller told dispatch they witnessed a man armed with an AR-style rifle exchanging gunfire with two other individuals.

Officers arrived and interviewed witnesses who identified Brandon Whitehead as one of the men involved. When police located Whitehead at his home, they discovered he had a gunshot wound to his foot. He was treated by first responders at the scene and transported to the hospital.

Investigators say the confrontation began with an argument initiated by Whitehead. While one of the victims reportedly fired the first shot, police believe it was a defensive reaction after Whitehead returned with an AR-15 rifle from his home.

A search of Whitehead’s residence uncovered an AR-15 hidden under a mattress, along with ammunition and a handgun.

Whitehead was arrested on Monday and is facing the following charges:

Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon

Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon

He is currently being held in the Vanderburgh County Jail without bond.
