COLUMBUS, Ind. – A 27-year-old man from Austin, Indiana, is in custody for auto theft and leaving the scene of an accident after allegedly stealing an SUV from a local gas station.

On January 15, 2025, around 9:25 a.m., the Columbus Police Department (CPD) responded to a call from a gas station in the 4000 block of 25th Street. The vehicle owner reported that he had left his SUV running with a handgun inside when he entered the store. Upon noticing a man entering his vehicle, the owner rushed outside but was unable to stop the theft. The suspect, later identified as Brandon McIntosh, 27, drove off, striking a pillar as he left the parking lot.

A short time later, CPD officers located the stolen vehicle in the 3200 block of Flintwood Drive, with the firearm still inside. McIntosh was found walking nearby and identified from gas station security footage as the individual responsible for stealing the vehicle.

Additionally, CPD investigators discovered a car stolen earlier in January from the 2100 block of Pennsylvania Street. The vehicle had been left running outside when it was taken. Evidence, including video footage and witness statements, suggests that McIntosh was also responsible for this theft.

McIntosh was arrested and remains in the Bartholomew County Jail, facing preliminary charges of theft of a motor vehicle (a level 6 felony) and leaving the scene of an accident (a class A misdemeanor).

CPD Public Relations Officer Skyler Berry emphasized the importance of securing vehicles, especially when leaving firearms inside. “These incidents are good reminders to lock our vehicles and never leave a firearm unsecured. Remember: Hide it. Lock it. Keep it,” Berry said.

Safety Tips:

Hide or remove valuable items from your car.
Lock your doors with the windows closed when your car is unattended.
Keep your car keys with you when you leave your vehicle.
