The Borivali Police have arrested a 40-year-old woman, Karishma Jitesh Mehta, for allegedly cheating a tuition teacher and her relative of Rs 2.65 lakh by promising a teaching job and school admissions for their children in a reputed institution.
According to police sources, the complainant, a 30-year-old tuition teacher, was tutoring Mehta’s 10-year-old daughter. During this period, Mehta, claiming to be a ‘freelance BMC agent’, offered the teacher a job at a Borivali-based reputed school and assured admission for her seven-year-old son.
Between August 27 and October 29, 2024, the victims paid Mehta a total of Rs 2.65 lakh through multiple cash and online transactions. The teacher’s cousin, who was also lured into the scam, allegedly paid Rs 1.50 lakh in cash and online transfers after being promised school admissions for his two children. Mehta even provided fake admission receipts for the children.
The victims became suspicious after Mehta repeatedly postponed job confirmations and admission dates. On November 11, 2024, they approached the school directly and discovered that the receipts were fraudulent, police said.
Mehta was confronted but allegedly gave evasive replies and refused to return any money. Following this, the victims lodged a complaint with the Borivali Police. Based on the complaint filed on February 11, 2025, Mehta was booked for cheating and forgery-related offences and arrested on November 25, 2025. She has been remanded to police custody.
Further investigation is ongoing to determine whether other victims were targeted by Mehta.
