A parliamentary candidate from Thailand’s People’s Party has been arrested in connection with an ongoing investigation into a large-scale drug trafficking and money laundering operation, according to the Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB).
Officers arrested Boonrit Raorungroj, also known as Bank, at around 10:45 a.m. on December 29, 2025, at his residence in Bang Chuek Nang, Taling Chan district, Bangkok. Boonrit is a candidate for Constituency 33, which covers Bang Phlat and parts of Bangkok Noi.
The arrest followed an early-morning search of the property as part of a wider crackdown targeting an alleged criminal network suspected of laundering billions of baht through shell companies and financial channels. After being taken into custody, Boonrit was transferred to NSB headquarters, where authorities conducted fingerprinting and initiated formal legal procedures.
While speaking briefly to reporters, Boonrit denied all allegations, stating that he had no involvement in drug trafficking or money laundering. He said he had not knowingly received funds connected to illegal activities and added that he would determine his legal response at a later stage.
Boonrit also addressed the political fallout, issuing an apology to the People’s Party. He did not confirm whether he would suspend political activities while the investigation continues.
Police officials said the arrest is based on evidence obtained during a broader narcotics and financial crime operation that has already led to multiple arrests across several provinces. Investigators allege the network used registered transport and logistics companies with minimal legitimate operations to move illicit funds.
Authorities emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that additional suspects may be identified as financial records and asset trails are further examined. Officials reiterated that all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty under the law.
Boonrit was later transferred to a detention facility as investigators prepared to formally file charges. Further developments are expected as the case progresses through the judicial process, according to Khaosod.
