One day after Navjot Singh, a senior official in the Finance Ministry, was killed in a road accident, Delhi Police have booked the woman allegedly behind the wheel of the BMW that struck him. The case now includes charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and tampering with evidence.
Navjot Singh, 56, served as Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs. He was riding his motorcycle with his wife when a BMW crashed into them in the Delhi Cantonment area on Sunday afternoon. Singh was killed on the spot, while his wife sustained injuries and is currently recovering.
Police confirmed that the driver of the BMW, whose identity has not been publicly released, attempted to tamper with evidence following the accident. The FIR was updated on Monday, and police said further investigation is ongoing to determine whether more individuals were involved in the cover-up attempt.
Authorities have invoked Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and relevant sections for destroying or concealing evidence. Officials noted the gravity of the offense and stated that strict action will be taken as per law.
The incident has sparked fresh concerns about reckless driving, particularly involving high-end vehicles in the capital.
