PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — A 31-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a hate crime and arson that occurred at the Chabad of Charlotte County on Friday night, according to the Punta Gorda Police Department.

Blake Richard Hoover was taken into custody Monday and is facing charges of arson and criminal mischief. He is currently being held at the Charlotte County Jail.

The investigation began after two of Hoover’s family members contacted police Monday morning, expressing concern that he may have been involved in the incident.

Officers went to Hoover’s residence on Copiapo Circle in the Deep Creek area of Punta Gorda. After interviews and gathering evidence, police obtained search warrants for his bedroom, vehicle, and electronic devices.

Investigators, including agents from the ATF, spent all day Monday at the scene. A can of gasoline was recovered from the home, and Hoover’s vehicle was towed for further examination, according to Gulf Coast News.

The fire broke out around 11 p.m. Friday at the Chabad center on West Henry Street. Firefighters found flames at the back of the building, specifically in a children’s classroom. Fortunately, no one was inside, and the fire was contained to one room.

Investigators discovered that an accelerant had been used to ignite the fire after a window screen was cut. In addition, the letter “J” had been spray-painted in multiple locations on the property, including walls and sidewalks.

Police Chief Pamela Smith condemned the act, stating:

“Our hearts go out to our Jewish community members. This was a despicable act that is not representative of the great City of Punta Gorda. We hope that you can celebrate the High Holy Days knowing an arrest has been made, and we wish you peace and happiness for the New Year.”

The investigation remains ongoing.
