In a major crackdown on the drug trade, Manipur Police arrested two alleged drug smugglers from Assam on Sunday, seizing 828 grams of brown sugar valued at approximately Rs20 lakhs. The operation took place in Senapati district, near the Nagaland border.
The accused have been identified as Bishwajit Hazarika (46) and Irfan Hague (34). Based on a tip-off, the anti-smuggling unit of Manipur police commandos, in coordination with the Senapati district police, carried out a raid near the KSTC dumping site, under the jurisdiction of Senapati Police Station.
“During the operation, the police seized 828 grams of brown sugar, a four-wheeler, and two mobile phones from the duo,” confirmed a police official.
A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and further investigation is underway to trace links to larger inter-state smuggling networks.
Sources suggest that drug trafficking across Assam, Manipur, and Nagaland continues to operate in a coordinated manner, prompting intensified surveillance along state borders.
Meanwhile, Assam Police have also ramped up efforts against drug smuggling, recovering large quantities of narcotics in recent operations.
