Bhubaneswar Police took six accused cyber fraudsters into three-day remand following their arrest in connection with a fake call centre operation busted on Wednesday in the Sundarpada area of Bhubaneswar. The accused, all hailing from Kolkata, were allegedly involved in a widespread scam that targeted national and international clients.
According to Bhubaneswar DCP Pinak Mishra, the fraudsters sent out fraudulent emails to clients who had subscribed to antivirus software, tricking them into paying for fake services. Haider Ali, the main accused, reportedly admitted that his team of six members was responsible for sending these deceptive emails, posing as legitimate antivirus service providers.
The six suspects were presented before a local court on Thursday, where they were remanded to 14 days of judicial custody. However, the investigation is far from over, and the police are now focusing on further interrogation to uncover more details. DCP Mishra mentioned that a team from the Commissionerate Police would visit Kolkata to verify the accused’s original identities, educational qualifications, and any prior criminal records.
The call centre was operated from an apartment in Sundarpada, where the police raid led to the arrest of the six accused individuals. Almost all of the suspects are graduates, with some possessing technical knowledge, making them well-suited for running the fraudulent operation. Authorities are continuing to investigate the full extent of the scam and its victims.
