Bindapur police have arrested a 27-year-old woman, identified as Bharti, for allegedly stealing gold and silver jewellery worth several lakh rupees from her employer’s residence. Bharti had been employed as a domestic help at the complainant’s house on Bal Udyan Road.
The theft came to light after the complainant reported that her ancestral jewellery went missing between December 7 and 13, while the family was out of town. A case was registered under Section 305 (theft in a dwelling house) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Bindapur police station.
Police noted no signs of forced entry, raising suspicion about insider involvement. CCTV footage captured a masked woman entering the house on December 12 and leaving within 15 minutes. Further investigation traced her movements to Janakpuri, where she was identified by the complainant as her former maid.
DCP (Dwarka) Ankit Singh stated that technical surveillance revealed Bharti had switched her previous mobile number and began using a new one. Based on her movement patterns, police conducted multiple raids and finally located her at her rented flat in Janakpuri.
During the raid, Bharti was allegedly packing her belongings to flee. She admitted to selling part of the stolen jewellery for around Rs 3.8 lakh, which she deposited in her bank account. Authorities also recovered gold and silver jewellery, including a chain, earrings, ring, locket, silver payal, and toe rings, from her residence.
Bharti reportedly committed the theft to arrange money to buy a small flat for herself and her child. She had no previous criminal record. Police investigations confirmed that she had duplicated the house keys during her employment to carry out the theft.
