Last month, Chetla Police arrested 11 individuals, including four domestic workers—maids, caregivers, and cooks—who were involved in stealing valuable jewellery and items worth crores from a businessman’s residence on Raja Santosh Roy Road in Alipore. Despite recovering some stolen items, the police were unable to trace a diamond worth Rs 50 lakh, which the family considered the most precious.

After over a month of investigation, the police successfully tracked down the culprit, Bharat Bhogilal Shah (43), in Girgaum, Mumbai. Shah was arrested and the diamond was recovered. The arrest was made by the South Division’s Deputy Commissioner of Police, Priyobrata Roy, who confirmed the capture. “We arrested Shah from his residence at Girgaum under Gamdevi PS in Zone 2 of Mumbai Police,” Roy said.

The investigation led the authorities to monitor the activities of the diamond merchant. Shah had switched from traveling by car to using local trains, which raised suspicions. Meanwhile, another police team conducted a raid in Metiabruz early Tuesday morning. They apprehended a gold trader, Santosh Karmakar, and recovered stolen gold jewellery worth around Rs 70,000 from him.

The case continues as further investigations into the stolen items are underway.
