BATON ROUGE, La. — A 62-year-old woman from Greensburg has pleaded guilty to stealing $50,000 in Social Security benefits intended for a deceased relative.

Beverly Watson McNabb entered her plea to one count of theft of government funds, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Ellison C. Travis. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and supervised release.

The Department of Justice stated that McNabb had access to the bank account of R.W., her elderly family member who received Social Security retirement benefits. Although R.W. died on December 5, 2015, the benefits continued to be deposited until April 2020.

McNabb used the funds for various personal expenses, including a wedding dress, groceries, restaurant bills, and even prison commissary items for friends. Numerous cash withdrawals were also made during that time.

A sentencing date has not yet been set.
