Kilimani, Kenya — Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested Benedict Odeng’ero Wekesa, accused of running a lucrative police recruitment scam that defrauded job seekers of Ksh.2.5 million.
The scam involved promising victims “guaranteed” admission into the National Police Service (NPS) for a fee. Each victim received a forged recruitment letter and was assured their placement was secured, only to later realize the promises were false.
“By the time reality finally kicked in, a total of Ksh.2.5 million had changed hands, and the dreams of joining the service had vanished,” the DCI stated on Saturday.
Acting on complaints, officers ambushed Wekesa at the Sagret Hotel in Kilimani. During the operation, investigators recovered 20 additional fake recruitment letters, indicating the scheme may have been more extensive than initially reported.
A second suspect, believed to be an accomplice, escaped before being apprehended. Wekesa is now in custody awaiting arraignment, while detectives continue to pursue leads to locate the fugitive.
The DCI warned the public to beware of fake police recruiters and reminded citizens that genuine enlistment into the NPS is free, fair, and transparent.
