A clerk at the Zakirnagar branch of Bank of Baroda, Shatrughan Kumar Chaudhary (38), has been arrested for allegedly stealing gold jewellery worth Rs30 lakh from a customer locker.

According to Chandan Kumar, Officer in-charge of Azadnagar police station, the theft came to light on November 11 when bank manager Md. Azharuddin lodged a complaint. Investigation using CCTV footage helped identify Chaudhary as the prime suspect.

Chaudhary, a resident of Post Office Road in Mango, had been posted at the branch for two years. The bank manager reportedly handed over locker keys to Chaudhary in June when he went on leave for four days. A subsequent bank audit in November revealed the gold items were missing.

During questioning, Chaudhary confessed to the crime, confirming his involvement in stealing the valuables. Police have taken him into custody for further investigation.
