In a chilling case of dowry-related violence, a man and his father have been arrested in Nalanda district, Bihar, for the murder of a four-month pregnant woman, whom they cremated secretly to conceal the crime.
The victim, Madhuri Kumari (26), was allegedly killed by her husband Balram and father-in-law Radheshyam Kewat at their home in Mandilpur village, under Rahui police station limits, on the night of April 24. After the murder, they discreetly cremated her body and scattered the ashes in a nearby agricultural field, while falsely claiming she had died by suicide.
The case came to light when villagers informed Madhuri’s father, Surendra Kewat of Deepnagar village, about his daughter’s death on April 25. Upon arriving and learning about the suspicious circumstances, he filed a complaint on April 26, accusing the in-laws of dowry harassment and murder.
According to Rahui SHO Kunal Kumar, the accused confessed and led police to the site of the illegal cremation. Madhuri’s father stated that although he had given Rs 4 lakh in cash and goods worth Rs 2 lakh at the time of the marriage in 2020, the in-laws had been demanding an additional Rs 1 lakh and torturing her regularly.
Police have arrested both Balram and his father Radheshyam, and further investigations are underway under relevant sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act and IPC.
