The Railway Protection Force (RPF) arrested a notorious multi-state mobile phone thief on Saturday near Thiruvananthapuram railway station. The accused, Azad Mia (22), from West Bengal, was caught behind the Power House Road while attempting to flee the station premises.
Azad Mia had been linked to numerous mobile phone thefts on trains running between Thiruvananthapuram and cities such as Kanyakumari and Bengaluru. He mainly targeted passengers in crowded general compartments during daytime journeys.
Police reports reveal that Azad was skilled at discreetly lifting phones from women’s handbags and men’s pockets. His method involved boarding trains as a regular passenger, committing the theft without raising suspicion, and exiting before the train departed. He would then leave the railway premises to avoid detection. Authorities are investigating further to determine if he is connected to other thefts across the region.
