A 22-year-old man, Austin M. Lukac, from Belvidere, was arrested after reportedly restraining a woman and firing a gun during a domestic dispute in Wonder Lake, Illinois, on Tuesday night. Lukac is facing multiple serious charges, including aggravated unlawful restraint, aggravated assault with a firearm, reckless discharge of a firearm, unlawful restraint, domestic battery, and assault.
According to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a domestic battery call around 11:37 p.m. on January 14 at a residence on the 5500 block of West Wonder Lake Road. Upon arriving, authorities learned that Lukac had fled the scene in his vehicle.
Court documents reveal that Lukac, armed with a black Sig Sauer handgun, allegedly restrained the woman, preventing her from leaving and covering her mouth to silence her. The woman, fearing for her safety, attempted to flee to a closet for shelter as Lukac fired a shot. After the incident, Lukac reportedly admitted to some of the allegations and even pointed the gun at his own head during the altercation.
Law enforcement located Lukac in Winnebago County early Wednesday morning and arrested him. He was later transported to the McHenry County Jail.
The McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain Lukac pending trial, citing him as a danger to others. However, Judge Cynthia Lamb denied the petition during a court hearing, releasing Lukac on conditions including GPS monitoring, no contact with the victim, and a restriction from leaving the state without approval. Lukac is scheduled for a status hearing on January 29.
