Auburn, N.Y. – Adam Birtwell, 30, was arrested on March 19, 2025, for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from his grandmother through a series of fraudulent transactions, according to the Auburn Police Department.
Police were dispatched to a home on North Hopes Avenue following a fraud complaint. During their investigation, officers discovered that Birtwell had been secretly transferring funds from his grandmother’s bank account to his CashApp account since November 2024. Over the course of several months, Birtwell managed to steal a total of $3,111.
On March 19, Birtwell attempted to transfer an additional $4,192, but the transaction was stopped when the victim received a text alert. After confirming the thefts at the bank, the victim reported the crime to the authorities.
While in custody at the Auburn Police Department, Birtwell attempted to escape by slipping off his handcuffs. He was stopped by officers and now faces an additional escape charge.
Birtwell has been charged with felony grand larceny, identity theft, attempted grand larceny, and attempted identity theft, as well as misdemeanor unlawful possession of personal identification information and escape. He was processed and transported to the Cayuga County Jail, where he awaits his CAP arraignment.
