Attorney Jason Michael Smith Arrested for Tax Evasion

Faces felony charges for theft, tax fraud, and misconduct

by Amelia Crawford

Greenwood, Indiana — Jason Michael Smith, a 45-year-old attorney from Seymour, has been arrested on multiple felony charges, including corrupt business influence, tax evasion, and theft. Smith was taken into custody by Greenwood Police on Tuesday and is currently being held at the Johnson County Jail, pending extradition to Jackson County.

The charges stem from a long-term investigation led by Detective Tim Denby of the Indiana State Police Special Investigations Section, which began in 2024. Authorities allege that Smith failed to file both personal and business tax returns for several years, despite substantial income.

Smith owns Smith Law Services and Floyd Harris Holdings LLC. According to investigators, between 2019 and 2023, he deposited over $2.5 million into his law firm’s account and another $1.3 million into Floyd Harris Holdings—without paying income taxes on either. The funds were allegedly used for personal expenditures, not business operations.

A search warrant executed in October 2024 at Smith’s home and office on North Chestnut Street in Seymour led to the discovery of a controlled substance, prompting an additional Class A misdemeanor charge.

Smith now faces the following charges:

1 count of corrupt business influence (Level 5 felony)

5 counts of tax evasion (Level 6 felony)

5 counts of theft (Level 6 felony)

1 count of possession of a controlled substance (Class A misdemeanor)

The Indiana State Police investigation was supported by agents from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Charges were formally filed on May 29, and an arrest warrant was issued four days later.

Smith has a history of disciplinary actions from the Indiana Supreme Court Disciplinary Commission. He was suspended from practicing law in 2022 due to prior misconduct, including a 120-day suspension tied to a two-year federal court suspension by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.

His most recent arrest could lead to further professional and legal consequences.
