Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with Mizoram Police, seized 11.062 kg of methamphetamine tablets, valued at over Rs33.18 crore, from a drug peddler near the India-Myanmar border on Friday. The operation took place in Kaifang area, Saitual district, Mizoram, following credible intelligence on narcotics trafficking.
The accused, Hasan Ali, a resident of Badarpur district in southern Assam, was apprehended and handed over to Mizoram Police for legal action under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
The seized substance, commonly known as Yaba or party tablets, contains methamphetamine and caffeine and is highly addictive. The contraband and a vehicle used in trafficking were recovered for further investigation.
An Assam Rifles statement highlighted that the operation underscores their vigilance in curbing drug trafficking and protecting youth from narcotics. Mizoram, which shares a 510 km border with Myanmar and a 318 km unfenced border with Bangladesh, is often used as a transit route for drugs, wildlife smuggling, and other contraband.
Authorities continue to investigate the network and the possible routes used for smuggling the meth tablets into Mizoram.
