In a major drug bust, Assam Police seized contraband worth Rs 9.5 crore and arrested three individuals, including a woman, in two separate operations conducted in Silchar and Guwahati.
In the first operation, based on credible intelligence, a team from Panbazar Police Station was deployed at Guwahati Railway Station to intercept contraband being transported from Silchar to Guwahati via the Silchar-Coimbatore Express train. Upon the train’s arrival on Wednesday, a female suspect was apprehended. The arrested woman, identified as Parvina Khatun Bibi (31), a resident of Sadialer Khuti village, West Bengal’s Cooch Behar district, was found in possession of 20,000 methamphetamine tablets, valued at Rs 5 crore, along with a mobile phone and Rs 1,000 in cash.
In a separate operation on Tuesday night, Assam Police arrested two drug peddlers at Salchapra, in Cachar district, and seized 847 grams of heroin and 4.035 kg of opium, with a combined estimated value of Rs 4.5 crore.
The drugs are believed to have been smuggled from Myanmar through Mizoram, a known route for drug trafficking, particularly heroin and methamphetamine tablets. The smuggling route involves several northeastern states, including Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, and Mizoram, which share an unfenced border with Myanmar. Myanmar’s Chin State serves as a key hub for drug smuggling into India.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the police for their successful operation, commending the authorities for their vigilance. Legal actions have been initiated under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985.
