In a successful operation, Assam Police rescued two minor girls from Barak Valley who had been trafficked and sold in Rajasthan. The operation also led to the arrest of one suspect, with authorities continuing their efforts to apprehend others involved in the trafficking ring.
The investigation began on January 24 when a complaint was lodged at Kalain Police Station by a resident of Gumrah Tea Estate, Cachar district. The complainant alleged that two women, Rupali Dutta and Ganga Ganju, had lured his 15-year-old daughter and her friend with promises of employment.
One of the girls later escaped and returned home, revealing that they had been sold and forced into marriages with strangers. Based on this information, Cachar Police traced a phone call from the missing girl, which led them to Rajasthan.
A four-member police team, led by a female officer, was dispatched to Jaipur with assistance from Rajasthan Police. They successfully rescued the girl from the home of Leela Ram in Manpura, Rajasthan, where she had been sold for Rs4 lakh. Ram was arrested and brought back to Assam.
During the operation, another minor girl from Sribhumi district, Assam, who had also been trafficked, approached the police team for help. She was rescued and safely returned to Assam.
Superintendent of Police, Cachar, Numal Mahatta, confirmed that the main suspects, Rupali Dutta and Ganga Ganju, are currently on the run, with their locations traced outside Assam. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend all those involved in this trafficking network, which specifically targets tribal girls from Assam’s tea garden areas.
The rescued girls have been reunited with their families after undergoing medical examinations and legal procedures. Authorities remain committed to dismantling human trafficking networks and ensuring the safety of vulnerable individuals in the region.
