In a significant crackdown against the rampant fake gold trade in Assam, Barpeta district police successfully apprehended three individuals involved in the illicit business during a targeted raid in Howly. The arrests took place when the suspects were caught attempting to sell counterfeit gold.
The Howly Police conducted the raid after receiving a tip-off that led them to the residence of Phulki Para Abdur Rahim. The operation, led by Howly Police Station in-charge Rajiv Neog, resulted in the capture of Rashidul Haque from Sonapur Reserve village in Lakhimpur, along with Abdur Rahim and Hussain Ali from Phulki Para village in Howly. The trio was caught with a batch of fake gold intended to deceive unsuspecting buyers.
According to initial investigations, Rashidul Haque was responsible for transporting the counterfeit gold from Lakhimpur to Howly, intending to sell it to a potential buyer. The police’s swift intervention prevented the scam from going through, with the suspects caught red-handed in the act.
Superintendent of Police, Barpeta, Sushanta Biswa Sarma, commended the operation, reiterating the department’s commitment to dismantling the networks behind these fraudulent activities. The arrested individuals are currently undergoing interrogation, and authorities are working to trace the broader operations involved in the fake gold trade. Sarma hinted that further arrests may follow as the investigation progresses.
This operation is part of an ongoing crackdown by Assam’s law enforcement agencies against the rising number of fake gold scams across the state. The proliferation of such illegal activities has raised significant concerns, particularly in rural areas where victims often struggle to differentiate between genuine and counterfeit items.
