Assam Police have successfully intercepted a major interstate drug trafficking attempt in Cachar district, arresting Pradip Kar, a resident of Tripura, officials said on Monday. The operation followed intelligence inputs regarding the movement of narcotics.

Police stopped a vehicle arriving from Tripura and seized approximately 362 kilograms of cannabis from the accused. The estimated market value of the seized drugs exceeds Rs 2.5 crore. A case under relevant sections has been registered, with investigations ongoing.

This arrest highlights the ongoing challenge of narcotics smuggling through southern Assam, often used as a transit route for drugs from neighbouring states to other parts of India.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently emphasized the complexity of fighting drug trafficking, citing traffickers’ use of advanced methods like drones to deliver consignments remotely. “The menace is huge, and traffickers operate from foreign countries using agents to avoid capture,” he noted.

CM Sarma underlined the state government’s zero-tolerance policy and commitment to continuous operations to eradicate drug peddling networks. He pointed out the difficulty in catching smugglers who carry tiny consignments but praised Assam Police for staying ahead in the fight.
