Assam Police successfully arrested four drug peddlers in Sivasagar district on March 4, seizing nearly 1 kg of heroin worth Rs 5 crore. The operation, conducted jointly by the Sivasagar and Golaghat district police, was led by John Das, the Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) of Golaghat.
The operation was launched following information linked to a case (number 18/24) under the NDPS Act filed at the Sarupathar police station. The police raided Halwating in Sivasagar district and apprehended four suspects, recovering 65 packets of heroin, totaling 992.13 grams, which had been cleverly concealed in a secret chamber in the boot of two Bolero vehicles.
The arrested individuals were identified as Pinku Debnath, Narayan Debnath, Baburam Konwor, and Rabi Jaiswal. Rabi Jaiswal, the primary suspect in the Sarupathar police station case, had been on the run since July 2023. The heroin consignment had been transported from a neighboring state, and the destination was reportedly Tinsukia.
Assam’s Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the operation, sharing the success on social media, stating, “Drugs worth Rs 5 crore recovered. In a joint anti-narcotics operation carried out by Golaghat Police and Sivasagarpol at Haluwating under Sivasagar district, the following items were recovered: 2 Bolero vehicles, 992.13 grams of heroin, and individuals apprehended.”
This seizure follows a major crackdown earlier this year when Cachar district police confiscated narcotics worth Rs 1 crore in January 2023, continuing the state’s aggressive fight against illegal drugs.
