The Khatkhati Police in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district seized 10.937 kilograms of opium along with Rs1.10 lakh in cash during a routine checkpoint operation. The contraband was discovered in a white Toyota Fortuner (registration number CH 04 L 0888) near the Assam-Nagaland border.
Two individuals, Daljit Singh and Harjit Singh, both from Punjab, were arrested for transporting the narcotics through this inter-state corridor. This bust sheds light on the expanding role of organized drug networks using the Northeast as a transit route for smuggling.
Police officials noted that the opium was expertly concealed inside the vehicle, signaling sophisticated planning by the traffickers. Early investigations indicate the opium originated from a northeastern state and was destined for distribution in Punjab.
This seizure is part of Assam Police’s ongoing anti-narcotics drive, focusing on strategic border checkpoints prone to trafficking. Increased vigilance has led to several such interceptions along vulnerable routes in recent months.
