A joint operation by Assam Police and Manipur Police led to the arrest of three alleged members of an interstate vehicle theft gang and the recovery of a stolen vehicle from Dispur, Assam, officials said on Monday.

Based on intelligence that a vehicle stolen from Assam was being used in Imphal, a team from the East Guwahati Police District (EGPD) coordinated with the Manipur Police Anti-Vehicle Lifting Team for a successful operation on Sunday.

The stolen vehicle, a Mahindra Thar (AS01FQ0969), was recovered from Imphal following the arrest of the suspects, later identified as Akoijam Universe (27) from Imphal East district, Achom Winner Meitei (26) from Imphal West, and Thounaojam Smananda from Imphal West.

Police reported that the gang had initially acquired the vehicle from a victim in Ghoramara, Assam, under the guise of a self-driving agreement, after which the vehicle went missing.

The arrested individuals and the recovered Mahindra Thar were transferred to Assam Police for legal proceedings, and investigations are ongoing to determine if the gang is linked to other interstate vehicle thefts.
