Asmat Jan @Taboo Arrested in Kashmir Gold Racket

Multi-district cheating and stolen-gold case cracked

by Ananya Mehta

Srinagar police have cracked a major multi-district cheating and stolen-gold racket operating across the Kashmir Valley. Acting on precise intelligence, Police Station Lal Bazar arrested Asmat Jan @Taboo, a woman wanted in multiple fraud and cheating cases registered in Lal Bazar, Safakadal, Chadoora, Sopore, and Khrew (Awantipora).

The accused had been evading arrest for a long time, frequently moving between West Bengal, Punjab, Maharashtra, and Jammu to avoid authorities. Following sustained efforts, five dedicated teams from Lal Bazar tracked and apprehended her from Hotel White House in Jalandhar, Punjab, under the supervision of the SDPO and Zonal SP.

The Kashmir Valley Gold Association had previously expressed concern over her repeated involvement in cheating gold shopkeepers. An FIR (No. 42/2025) has been registered at PS Lal Bazar under Sections 303(2) and 318(4) of the BNS.

Along with Asmat Jan, police also arrested associates Shameem Ahmad Sheikh, a goldsmith from Bohri Kadal involved in purchasing stolen gold at undervalued rates and facilitating its circulation, and Basir Ahmad Dar, responsible for transporting and disposing of stolen gold.

The operation highlights the coordinated efforts of law enforcement to dismantle organized gold theft and cheating networks in Kashmir.
