The Wagholi police have arrested two interstate gang members for their involvement in a credit card scam that was used to fraudulently purchase mobile phones online, police confirmed on Tuesday.
The accused, Aslam Khan (22) from Bihar, now living in Wagholi, and Adib Khan (21) from Surat, Gujarat, are believed to be part of a larger racket. Police are searching for an unidentified mastermind from Jharkhand.
Between August 16 and September 7, a 32-year-old Indian Armed Forces naik reported suspicious activity after receiving an APK file via messenger promising a 50% shopping discount. Clicking the file led to the victim’s phone being compromised.
Using stolen credit card information, the accused purchased four high-end mobile phones worth Rs81,709 through an e-commerce site. The victim promptly filed a complaint with Wagholi police.
Investigations traced the delivery addresses and technical data, leading to the identification and arrest of the suspects.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Somany Mude described the method: “The accused sent fake bank app APKs to steal passwords and use funds to buy phones, arranging deliveries near warehouses for quick collection.”
Senior police inspector Yuvraj Hande added that after phones were delivered in Wagholi, Adib flew from Surat to Pune to collect them and sold the phones in Gujarat with help from another accused, Pharhan.
Police continue to investigate to find all members of the interstate scam network.
