Baldwin Park, California – Federal agents arrested a Mexican national wanted for multiple violent crimes in Baldwin Park on Wednesday, just hours after local leaders reiterated their support for undocumented residents.
Arturo Terron-Quevedo, an undocumented immigrant, was taken into custody near the Baldwin Park City Hall by officers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), according to a senior ICE official. The arrest followed his release from local custody.
Terron-Quevedo faces serious charges including rape, assault with a deadly weapon likely to cause great bodily injury, and inflicting corporal injury, ICE confirmed.
The arrest came on the same day Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and 30 other officials publicly criticized ICE operations, claiming that federal agents were unfairly targeting undocumented immigrants without criminal records.
Earlier in the week, the City of Baldwin Park and its police department released a joint statement expressing support for immigrants, regardless of their legal status. Baldwin Park Mayor Alejandra Avila underscored this message in a written statement.
“As Mayor, I speak and advocate for all members of our community, including our undocumented immigrant residents,” Avila said. “I recognize that for many this is a scary time, and I hope you know that the City of Baldwin Park and Baldwin Park Police Department support the wellbeing of all our residents.”
The arrest of Terron-Quevedo highlights the ongoing tensions between federal immigration enforcement actions and local governments offering sanctuary or support to undocumented residents amid broader political debates and protests across California.
