Braian Nahuel Paiz, the Argentine waiter charged in connection with Liam Payne’s tragic death, has been arrested on January 3 after being accused of supplying the late singer with cocaine. Paiz, 31, was taken into custody outside Buenos Aires, just days after being charged by Argentina’s National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office. The charges are related to Paiz’s alleged role in the events leading to Payne’s fall from a hotel balcony in October 2023. Paiz is now facing a prison sentence ranging from four to 15 years if convicted.
Paiz and his lawyer, Fernando Madeo Facente, have consistently maintained his innocence. Paiz stated in an interview with Telefe Noticias in November that although he and Payne had consumed drugs together, he never supplied them to the singer nor received any money from him.
Payne, 31, passed away on October 16, 2023, after falling from the third-floor balcony of the CasaSur Hotel in Buenos Aires. His death has raised questions regarding the circumstances surrounding the fall, with officials revealing that Payne’s body contained traces of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant, indicating a history of drug use in the 72 hours leading up to his death.
In addition to Paiz, four other individuals have been charged in connection with the case. The CasaSur hotel manager, receptionist, and one of Payne’s friends were all charged with manslaughter. Authorities allege that they failed to assist Payne during his vulnerable state, knowing he suffered from multiple addictions. Paiz was specifically accused of supplying cocaine to Payne on two occasions before his death, once on October 14, just two days prior to the fatal incident.
The case also highlights troubling details about the hotel’s role in Payne’s last moments. Prosecutors stated that Payne, in a state of reduced consciousness, was reportedly dragged to his hotel room by several people instead of receiving immediate help.
Liam Payne’s tragic passing has shocked fans worldwide, and the investigation continues to explore the events leading to his untimely death. His funeral, attended by his former One Direction bandmates, was held on November 20, 2023, in the English countryside, marking a final farewell to the beloved singer.
